Module 2 — Redstone in One Map

Excerpt. The full module runs about 18 minutes and adds the Gate Interview Script and the Building → Gate Capture Card.

Don't pick a house until you know your gate.

This module's outcome. Adopt a gate-first mental model: confirm your building + preferred gate with your sponsor, gaining unit, hiring manager, or FSO before you sign a lease or an offer. “Miles to Redstone” is the wrong unit of analysis.

Do this module before you shop a roof. Money math is Module 5. The corridor shortlist is Module 6 — and Module 6 assumes this card is already filled.

1. Why “miles to Redstone” fails

Redstone is a large installation, not a single driveway with one clock-in door. Listing copy that says “15 minutes to the Arsenal” or “X miles to Redstone” is measuring a polygon, not your report point.

Two people can live on the same street and have different commutes because they use different gates and report to different buildings. Two people can work “on Redstone” and still not share a morning path. Cross-base driving after you pick the wrong corridor is an expensive mistake: extra miles every workday, a backup gate you never planned for, and a lease you cannot cheaply unwind.

The wrong unit: distance to the installation boundary, or to a ZIP that markets itself as “close to Redstone.”
The right unit: your building (or campus) + the gate your teammates actually use for your arrival window.

Official illustration that even the “front door” is gate-specific: the garrison newcomers page places the Gen. John J. Pershing Community Welcome Center (Building 3443) in the northeast section of the Arsenal, near Gate 8 (Goss Road), on Honest John Road. The One Stop (Building 3494) sits across that campus. That is a location hint for in-processing, not a recommendation that your daily gate is Gate 8. If your workplace is elsewhere — or off-post — your housing shortlist should not orbit the Welcome Center.

2. Gate-first: the shortlist follows building + gate

Housing follows the workplace you confirmed — not ZIP marketing.

1. Name the employer / unit and the building number or campus / complex.
2. Name the primary gate people in that building use for a normal report.
3. Name a backup gate they actually use when the primary is closed, restricted, or a bad fit for that day’s arrival.
4. Only then draw 2–3 corridors that feed that gate. That sketch is your one map. Module 6 turns it into a shortlist after the money spine (Module 5).

What this is not

• Not a ranking of neighborhoods or “best places to live.”
• Not a “best gate” or “safe corridor” verdict.
• Not a subdivision safe / unsafe label.
• Not permission to sign because a listing says “close to Redstone.”

If you are dual-track (two workplaces, two badges, two report windows), run this module twice. The household shortlist has to survive both gates, not the prettier ZIP.

5. Gate 9 (Rideout) — conversation, not a schedule

Public conversation often cites Gate 9 (Rideout Road) as a high-volume access point, and often as a 24-hour gate.

That sentence is a reference to what people say — not this guide’s hours, not a lane count, and not a reason to pick a house on Rideout by default.

Immediately: confirm current Gate 9 status — and every other gate you might use — on official garrison / Team Redstone public channels before you rely on any rumor, old PCS notes, or this guide. Hours, temporary closures, and FPCON-driven changes are owned by the installation. We will not paste a table here because a printed table goes stale.
